Portfolio / Conservation / St. Mary’s Church, Bottesford, LeicestershireA Grade II* listed church with beautifully proportioned tower and steeple standing at 210ft, the tallest in the county, St. Mary’s is the Parish Church for Belvoir Castle and is known as the Lady of the Vale. The oldest section of the church – the the Chancel and the North Transcept, is believed to be dated 13th century.Cravings of the deadly sins ornate the Nave and over the Chancel arch is the Coat of Arms of Queen Victoria. The medieval doom painting is just visible above the Coat of Arms. The Chancel after the reformation became the mausoleum to the de Roos and families (Earls & Dukes of Rutland). There are sealed crypts below the Chancel and Vestry areas again containing coffins of the Dukes. We have been appointed as church architect since 2000. In 2003 restoration of the Chancel monuments was undertaken by Nimbus Conservation. A substantial general fabric repair including facing stonework, roofing and glazing was undertaken by MSM Ltd in 2005. Back |
